The way full moons are named depends on what the usual events that occur in that particular month are. For example, the full moon in the month of May is called a”Flower Moon” due to the number of flowers that are blooming in the month. This full moon however is also given the name “Blood Moon” because of its red color in the sky when the full lunar eclipse occurs.
Man has often turned to the wonders of the night sky. Throughout history, events have occurred that coincide with the brightness of a full moon. You might remember that Mark Twain used a solar eclipse in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court to “prove” that the Yankee was a wizard. Many times in the exploration of unknown lands, full moons aided the travelers to continue their journey. And in the exploration of modern day man, the moon itself became the unknown land that was the focus in the 1960s.
The space race was becoming real when the Russian cosmonaut, Yury Gagarin, in April, 1961 became the first human in orbit followed by American astronaut, John Glenn, in April, 1962. Between June, 1963 and December, 1968, many more flights were launched with additional crew aboard and various out of spaceship activities performed. Then, in July, 1969, the first humans landed on the moon and the final launch of the program occurred in December, 1972. All in all, 12 astronauts walked on the moon through the six successful lunar missions.
The Forney Education Foundation understands and applauds the inquisitive nature that leads to the development of an entity like the space program. Innovation that aided the space program led to the development of many of the items in modern life that we sometimes take for granted like smart phones and self-driving vehicles.
So remember when you cast your gaze to the night sky and wonder what is out there, the next engineer or artist, mathematician or scientist could be right here in Forney ISD attending grade school classes. Won’t you go to www.forneyisdfoundation.org and see how easy it is to support FEF and the students in Forney ISD? It really is a beautiful sight.
