May 7, 2022 was the 148th running of the Kentucky Derby, the “fastest two minutes in horse racing.” This year the winner was Rich Strike, a horse with the second-longest odds-to-win in Derby history. There is always excitement when we can watch a Cinderella story unfold and this race was no exception.

How does this apply to children and education? It is a great life lesson for everyone when you consider the factors involved. First, Rich Strike was not in the best starting position. Many times children come to school with not the best start to their morning–not enough sleep or food, or missing homework. Second, the horse was not considered to be the biggest or the best horse. Students can surprise us with their talents when given a chance to shine. Third, the horse only had the opportunity to race that day because another horse withdrew. Sometimes the runner-up or understudy gets to step in and succeed. And fourth, the amount of money backing the horse was a pittance compared to others in the race–meaning, of course, that just a few dollars went a very long way.

Forney Education Foundation is very aware it isn’t about having the very best of everything to make the difference–it is about using everything given to better the learning experience for the students in Forney ISD. The teachers in Forney ISD know it is about the size of their students’ hearts and their dedication to strive and excel in everything that they undertake in the classroom and out.

Would you like the opportunity to help Forney ISD students “run for the roses”? It is very simple to do this by just going to www.forneyisdfoundation. org and visiting the page to see how FEF helps the students in Forney ISD win the race every day.
