Local citizens came out to the polls last Saturday, May 7, to wrap up the Joint Election for the City of Forney and Forney Independent School District.
On the ballot, Forney ISD proposed a $1.29 billion bond referendum to address the unprecedented growth in the district. Additionally, voters were electing school board members to positions 6 and 7. The City of Forney had Places 1, 3, and 5 of the Forney City Council on the ballot, as well as a petition requesting that the Forney City Council pass an ordinance adopting Texas Local Government Code, Chapter 143, Municipal Civil Service for the Fire Fighters and Police Officers, of the City of Forney.
The FISD Bond proposal was passed with 2,383 votes in favor outweighing 1,237 votes against. With the passage of this bond package, the district plans to build and renovate facilities to accommodate the rapid growth Forney is seeing, and it is purported to not necessitate an increase in the tax rate for taxpayers. Becky Dobbs, incumbent for Position 6, retained her position. Dobbs received 1,695 votes, beating out challengers Erika Price (1,565 votes) and Garet “Freedom” McInroe (217 votes). Katrina Black won the seat of Position 7 with 1,841 votes, taking the position of Chris Andrews who received 1,588 votes.
In the City of Forney elections, Mayor Pro-Tem James Traylor beat his challenger, Kalen Boren, 836 votes to 647. Place 3 incumbent, Robbie Powers, was challenged by Sandi Primous. The race ended with Primous appearing to narrowly beat Powers, 751 to 750. Absentee ballots are still able to be received by the county elections office as of press time, though, so complete official results of this race will be available after that deadline has passed. The last election for the Forney City Council was uncontested. Council Member Zahnd Schlensker in Place 5 received 1,185 votes to keep her position. Voters also overwhelmingly approved the Forney Fire Department and Forney Police Department converting to Civil Service, with 1,435 votes to 181.
