Harry and I “fell down on our jobs” this year as far as reporting the wins and losses of the LIONS of (as we call it) E. T. S. U. (East Texas State University) in Commerce, Texas. So, here, briefly, is what transpired this past 2021-2022 season.
LADY LIONS had a tremendous season, winning 27 games and losing 5 overall and posting a 12 wins and 3 losses Lone Star Conference record and finally losing a heart-breaking LSC Championship Game by only one point, 66—67, to #1 seed, West Texas A&M. (after opening the tournament with two consecutive victories against Cameron and U. T. Tyler to set up the “Finals” showdown!) The “Ladies” have been to the Conference Final each of the past three seasons!
And then, after opening the NCAA South Central Regional Quarterfinal with a victory over Colorado School of Mines, 80—74, our Lady Lions were squeezed out of advancing to the Championship Game by one basket, 67—69, by 3rd seed, Lubbock Christian. They also made it to the semi-finals last year!
8th year Coach, Jason Burton, is a finalist this year for WBCA National Coach of the Year as the Lady Lions are ranked in the “end of the year” “Top 20” in both National Polls in NCAA— Division II. The Ladies have been “end of the season” nationally ranked each of the last three years!
Dyani Robinson received 1st Team All-American honors by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and by “World Exposure Report” after also being selected 1st Team Lone Star Conference and Lone Star Conference Player of the Year (plus other honors and awards too numerous to detail in this article.)
MEN LIONS ended their season with a record of 17 wins and 9 losses after qualifying as the 8th seed (an “at large” selection) in the NCAA Division II Tournament (9th time in their Division II history). They bowed out after a loss to “top-seeded” Lubbock Christian University in the quarterfinals.
TAMU had a 9 wins and 5 losses record in the Lone Star Conference but did not advance past the 1st round (losing 46-49 to A&M-Kingsville) in the LSC Tournament, despite being the #5 seed!
Gaffney Clashon earned LSC Defensive Player of the Year accolades and was 3rd in the country in the “blocked shots” column! He was also an “Honorable Mention All-Conference” selection and was a member of the All-LSC Defensive Team.
The “Men” are coached by Jaret von Rosenberg, in his 5th year.
Harry (Power) and I hope to be back “up to speed” next year with our attending and reporting and hope that no “COVIDS,” etc. impede us!
