2021 was a year of major changes for Lori and I. We had decided to get out of the bustle of the big city that Forney has become and embrace a simpler life in the country. For months we focused on a four-county area to look for a new home: Kaufman, Rockwall, Collin and Hunt. Then one day Lori showed me a beautiful home that had come up on Realtor.com, on ten acres 2 miles north of Lone Oak, Texas. It had been on the market for a couple of months but we didn’t see it until the price had been reduced and it fell just outside the top of the budget range we had been searching in. The house was built in 1892 and was more than twice the size of our little house on Woodcrest in Forney, where we had lived for 38 years. A bonus was that it had a huge workshop and a barn on the property. We put in an offer and eventually closed on the property. We later found out the couple we bought it from had moved from Forney 12 years earlier. They had done a lot of improvements to the house and property since then.

After a long wait that seemed like an eternity, we finally got the go-ahead to move in two days before Christmas. We have been moving in and unpacking ever since.

Now our routine is a lot slower. Two miles south in Lone Oak we have all of the essentials. We have a top-notch diner called The Buffalo Grill, a terrific Mexican food place called Dos Ovejas and a really good BBQ joint called Duncan’s. For shopping we have a Dollar General Store and almost across HWY 69 from it a combination Dollar Tree and Family Dollar is expected to open any time. For more serious shopping and dining the City of Greenville is only 15 minutes away and our cars have already become accustom to making that trek up Highway 69.

Forney is now a lot bigger than Greenville, however there is a lot more shopping because Greenville is a self-sustaining town where Forney is still largely a bedroom community. However, I don’t think it will be long until Forney sees more business. For now, it looks like Terrell has become the beneficiary of all of the growth in Forney.

Among the things we miss: number one is Mama’s Daughters’ Diner. We also miss Kroger but whenever when we come back to town, we stock up our freezer with Nolan Ryan Beef from Kroger in Forney.

We have met quite a few people who have moved here from Forney who all came here looking for the small town feel. I have to say that I miss our friends in Forney deeply but I don’t miss the traffic.

Once we get settled in I will include some pictures of our new/old home.
