The Layden Senior Citizens Center of Forney welcomes you at 101 Main Street in City Hall; open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please enter the front or through Handicap accessible doors located at the back of City Hall where reserved parking for seniors is also available.

The center is a non-profit organization, so we work on donations. However, if you are unable to donate, please don’t let that keep you from attending the center to eat and or get busy joining in some, or all, the many fun festivities.

There is a competition (friendly of course) between Senior Connect centers in Kaufman county. More people need to know about us, not just because of the competition, but for all the good things we have going on. So please invite a friend to join you at the center. I’ve heard there’s going to be a big prize at the end of the competition, which we will be able to share in, so win/win and truly, there is something good for everyone!

If you don’t already have a copy of this month’s November calendar, feel free to drop by and pick one up. Our Director, Dena, strives to have fun, interesting activities happening every day. Check out Bridge on Tuesday, Thursdays at 12:30, Bingo Mondays, Fridays at 10:30, and much more.

For example, in November, every Tuesday is a craft project day. Currently, good headway is being made making snowmen out of socks and rice, adorable! We will be donating them to Cheyenne Medical, who will give to their patients.

The senior angel tree is up and running and Dena has a list of seniors in need of things. If you, or someone you know, may be interested in adopting an angel this year, please contact her at 972-552-6690.

The Lion’s Club and others do a great job helping families in need, but many times seniors are overlooked. Marian Stewart is in her ninth year with Sharing the Love Foundation and working with her at the center, we like to get a jump on the holidays and have things ready by December 1.

Another fun activity is with Molly’s Mangle Tangle, aka Zentangle, held on Thursdays at 9:00. This year City Bank is doing a turkey coloring contest again and will provide a $50 gift card for the best turkey!

If you are 60, or older, and want to join us for lunch, at noon please either drop by or call: 972-552-6690 to sign up by 10:30 a.m. There is also the opportunity to eat breakfast at the center, from 8:30-10:30am.

As per he Irish proverb, “laughter is brightest where food is best!” And per Jennifer Sise, “Time around the table is truly an investment worth making.”

November is the month that’s all about gratitude. In last week’s article, I encouraged you to consider things you’re thankful for each day. If you didn’t already begin, there’s no time like the present (that’s why it’s called a gift).

Speaking of gratitude, thank you to all our generous donors: Panera Bread, Papa John’s Pizza, and our Bingo sponsors: Alinea Hospice, Cheyenne Medical Lodge, Empower, Rely On Credit Union and, Oak Street Health, each of whom contributes weekly prizes. They are all greatly appreciated, and we invite you to frequent them whenever you can.

It can be challenging to be conversational. I’m an introvert so found some ‘ice breaker’ questions to initiate talking with family, new friends and have been enjoying utilizing a few. “What are 3 words that describe your family?” “If we lived in a zoo, what kind of animals would we be?” “Who is the funniest person you know?” “What is your favorite book?” And terrific for this month, “What are you thankful for?”

“November comes and goes, with the last red berries, and the first white snows. With night coming early and dawn coming late, and ice in the bucket and frost by the gate. The fires burn and the kettle sings, and earth sinks to rest until next spring.” –Elizabeth Coatsworth
