Delta Kappa Gamma’s Kaufman County Chapter, Alpha Tau, uses this year’s theme (Journey—which way will you go?) when planning for the year. On September 14, a planning meeting was held at the Kaufman County Library. Members signed up for committees, decided upon goals, and discussed and planned programs and projects. They also socialized at the beginning, using a back-to-school theme meal and mimicking students eating in the cafeteria with sack lunches. During this meeting, members were recognized for their years of service—Jerri Coates for 20 years and Nancy Shaw for 30 years.
As the journey continued on October 12, Alpha Tau held its first business meeting. With the library community room adorned in full festive fall décor, President Vivian Themer called the meeting to order after a delicious light meal of nachos, salads, and desserts, provided by the hostess committee of Judy Jedlicka, Jane West, Alberta Smith, Jana Garner, and Vivian Themer.
Next, she welcomed guests; Jane West led the pledges to both the United States and Texas flags, and Judy Jedlicka shared an inspiration of “taking in the Fall by making the most of it with family, friends, and the beauty of nature.”
The program consisted of honoring ten new teachers in the Kaufman County area schools. We asked principals to each choose a teacher who is new to the profession to be honored. These teachers were invited to the meeting and were asked to share with us their experiences as new teachers and their future plans. Each teacher received a grant of $100 to help with classroom expenses. Those who attended were the following: Kacey Schnieder from Wilson Elementary in Crandall, Kaylee Holder from Griffin Elementary in Forney, Haylee Jackson from Griffin Elementary in Forney, Elizabeth Tindall from Monday Elementary in Kaufman, Gaubriella Drollinger from Furlough Middle School in Terrell, and Schrildea Glover from Gilbert Willie Elementary in Terrell. Vivian Themer stated, “It was nice to hear new teachers talk about their love for the profession and the desire to help students learn.”
After the grant recipients spoke, the business meeting carried on with Vice President Kathy Stewart sharing with members that Forney Mayor Amanda Lewis will be the guest speaker at the November meeting. She also reviewed plans for the Christmas brunch and project. Second Vice President Karrie Pharris shared this year’s membership goal. Corresponding Secretary Suzy McCook encouraged members to share fun information about themselves to be included in the November issue of The Tales. Secretary Aydee Reyna asked that the minutes from the September meeting be accepted, and these were accepted unanimously. Treasurer Jerri Coates shared the treasurer’s report, and Parliamentarian Mollie Kasper shared the goal statement for the archives committee.
The meeting adjourned with The Tales trivia questions and door prizes.
The November meeting was held at the Kaufman County Library on November 9, beginning with a light meal at 5:00 p. m.
