Dear Aunt B,

I am having a spiritual issue. I don’t know what I believe and where to find out. I feel guilty even questioning these things. What do you suggest?

Questions about Life

Dear Questions about Life,

Oh sweetheart, I wish I could give you some answers here. I don’t think I am your girl for this one. This is not a one and done answer, no matter who you talk to. This is so important and such a deep question.

There is absolutely nothing to feel guilty about if you doubt what you believe. I find it hard to believe that there is anyone out there who doesn’t have doubts at times in their life. Doubt is not disbelief. Disbelief means I believe that something is untrue. Doubt is just a question. What do I believe? What if what I believe isn’t true? Often doubt and the search that doubt brings will make your faith even stronger. Often this doubt can be precipitated when you start to question what others have taught you about God, and like many things, you desire to come to your own beliefs.

Has something happened recently that has made you question what you believe or made it more on your mind? It is very normal to question what we believe and especially when there has been a big change in our lives.

My suggestion to you would be to find a few people that you trust and start asking questions. I imagine that you will find many different opinions and views on this matter. Open your heart and you will get a sense of what feels right to you.

I am sure you know there is a difference between spiritual and religious. Just in case, I will give you my take on these two topics.

Religion is a specific set of organized beliefs and practices. Each religion has some commonalities and some differences specific to each.

Spirituality is more personal. Generally spirituality means that you believe in something greater than yourself.

Religious and spirituality are not mutually exclusive. I find that most I know have and practice both. They practice a specific religion and feel personally very spiritual.

What I do know is I believe in love. I believe in a lot more but it starts with love. However, what I believe on this matter is not important. Discuss this with those you know personally. I am sure that the different churches have elders that would love to have these conversations. Find safe people and have many conversations. Discuss this with those who share your same values.

Sending you peace and love.

Much Love, Aunt B
