Forney ISD held a dedication ceremony for the new Griffin Elementary School located in the Devonshire subdivision on Tuesday, Sept. 28. The Forney ISD Board of Trustees, district administrators, District 4 House Representative Keith Bell and campus staff and teachers officially opened the school at the event. Jerry and Helen Griffin, the namesakes of the school were in attendance at the ceremony with several members of their family.
Griffin Elementary School is named in honor of Jerry and Helen Griffin. Jerry served as pastor at First Baptist for 33 years. Following that, he remained in Forney and served 13 years as Director of Missions for Kauf-Van Baptist Association. Following his service with Kauf-Van Baptist Association, he returned to First Baptist Forney in 2006 where he currently serves as Pastor to Senior Adults.
Helen taught English Language Arts in Sunnyvale for one year before starting a 27-year teaching history at Forney Elementary School. For 15 years of her 27 years at Forney ISD, she headed up the Reading Laboratory.
