LETTERS TO THE EDITOR/POLITICAL ADVERTISING POLICY
The Forney Messenger accepts and publishes at no charge letters to the editor that are signed by the writer, but only on a “space available” basis. However, the Messenger does not accept any non staff-written material that in the judgment of the editor is of a political nature unless the writer agrees to purchase the space. Neither the contents of letters to the editor nor the contents of non-staff written articles or advertising should be interpreted as reflecting the opinions or endorsements of any member of the Forney Messenger staff. The Forney Messenger will not publish any news, editorial or advertising material which, in the opinion of Forney Messenger, Inc.’s attorney, is libelous or implies libel, or which violates any law protecting privacy. If, in the opinion of the publisher, any type of advertising or editorial material, including letters to the editor, could be possibly construed to be libelous or otherwise unlawful, such ad or editorial copy shall be submitted to the attorney for review at the expense of the person submitting the copy, with the attorney’s fee to be paid in advance. The party submitting the material will have to modify the material as ordered by the attorney, if any such order is made, or will forfeit publication. If the submitting party refuses to submit the material for attorney review when asked to do so, or to pay the attorney fee, the Messenger will automatically refuse publication. The Forney Messenger also reserves the general right to refuse to publish, at the discretion of the editor, any news, editorial or advertising copy submitted to it. The original copies of any materials submitted to the Messenger automatically become the property of Forney Messenger, Inc.
The Forney Messenger is not responsible for the content of any classified advertising and leaves it up to the reader to determine the legitimacy of such advertising.
The Messenger may legally accept paid political advertising from a candidate who has officially filed for office. The Messenger will make every effort to place political advertising in accordance with the wishes of the candidate, but it should be understood that the placement of regular commercial advertising is of first priority. ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS, WEDDING STORIES and OBITUARIES:
We accept only engagement announcements, wedding stories and obituaries that are submitted and paid for by the couple involved or by a legitimate representative of the party or parties named therein. The original copies of all such articles will be kept on file at this office for a time not to exceed seven full days after publication for inspection by any interested party or individual.
The foregoing policies have been established by recommendation of the legal staff of the Texas Press Association of which the Forney Messenger is a member in full standing.
