The Pirates have been chomping at the bit for their season opener against Jacksonville. Over the summer many of the Pirates were preparing for the season with daily workouts and team building exercises. It definitely showed as they took the field Friday night! An exciting offensive backfield and cast of players took the field for the first offensive series of the night. Senior quarterback Jamonte Gordon-West led the way with Junior running back Chris Abron and receiver Luke Moffitt in tow.
West and the Pirates had to shake off a few cob webs. On the second play of the game West fumbled the ball giving Jacksonville great field position. The Pirate defense answered the call forcing the Indians to punt after six plays. Chris Abron took control with four hard nosed rushes to put them in scoring position. West connected with Junior receiver Deondre Bowman on a fifteen-yard route to score the first touchdown of the season. Jacksonville would give the ball back to the Pirates after a quick four and out. Abron took advantage of a huge hole created by his offensive line to score on a ten-yard run to end the first quarter.
The second quarter would start with an Indian score making it 16-7 Crandall. Crandall would gain possession of the ball and march down the field with ease. On the final play of the drive Abron marched the ball into the endzone. Unfortunately, it was called back due to taunting before crossing the goal line. Luckily the Pirates have a huge target in 6’4’’ sophomore receiver Joshua Smith. West connected with Smith for a twenty-yard touchdown reception making the score 23-7 Crandall. The Indians would answer quickly with a seven-play drive scoring and converting the twopoint conversion. With less than a minute left Moffitt returned the Indian kick off sixty-five yards to the tenyard line. This set up the Pirate offense to strike right before halftime. Running back Chris Abron took the handoff running right and then stopped on a dime to throw a five-yard touchdown pass to Moffitt! The score was 30-15 Crandall at the half.
Jacksonville came out of the locker room for the second half determined to change the course of the game. The next two scores were by the Indians off of a sixty-eight-yard reception and nineteen-yard reception. This brought the score to 30-29 Crandall. Luke Moffitt and Chris Abron would tack on two more scores for the Pirates to make the score 44-29 Crandall at the end of the third quarter.
West would connect with one of his favorite targets, Luke Moffitt, on a fifty-eight-yard touchdown reception to start off the fourth quarter. This all but sealed the deal as the Pirate defense held tough in the fourth quarter allowing only one score. The final score was 51-36 Crandall.
Chris Abron had one hundred & forty-seven yards rushing on nineteen attempts with two touchdowns. Abron also threw for another touchdown making it three touchdowns on the night. Tag that with Luke Moffitt’s four receptions of eighty-six-yards and three touchdowns, and they make for a dangerous dualthreat option in the games to come.
Head Coach Kyle Hardin was pumped to start out the season with a win. “It was awesome to be back under the lights on Friday night, see our home stands packed out and of course get the win!”
