The 2021 season opener was a night to remember for the Jackrabbits. Supported by excellent performances from the Forney Cheerleaders, Highsteppers, Forney Band, and Color Guard, the Forney Jackrabbit spirit was palpable throughout the game.

Forney traveled to Whitehouse last Friday night for what would become a memorable matchup against the Wildcats. As the Rabbits came into the game looking a little unsure of themselves, Whitehouse was able to capitalize on some Jackrabbit mistakes early in the game to capture a 20-0 lead going into the half. The Jackrabbits, who were not going to go down that easily, came out in the second half on a mission. They would score 21 unanswered points throughout the next two quarters to secure the win in East Texas.

After a slow start on offense in the first half, the Jackrabbits finally began clicking in the second half. The countless hours of practice leading into the season began to pay off when QB Jake White connected on a huge passing touchdown with Kofi Eduful. This began the comeback and brought the score to 20-7. This play was the momentum the Rabbits needed to set the stage for the rest of the game.

The Jackrabbit defense did give up to quick scores early in the game, but they quickly stiffened up the rest of the night. Whitehouse lined up for a punt late in the game, but the snap sailed over the punter’s head. Jackrabbit Defensive End Tristan Bennett would recover the ball for a touchdown, bringing the score to 20-14. Forney’s Offense would then drive it deep into Whitehouse territory where Quarterback Jake White was able to connect with Zachary Fuller in the corner of the endzone for the game tying touchdown. With the score tied at 20, Kicker Braden Merchant lined up for the Extra Point. The ball bounced off the left goal post but ultimately fell through the uprights, giving the Jackrabbits the lead 21-20.

Despite this season opener being an away game nearly two hours from home, the Forney Fans came out in full force. The stands were rowdy by the fourth quarter, with nearly everyone on their feet. The Rabbits held onto their lead for the last minutes of play, giving Forney their first win to kick off the season.

Notable performances from the game include QB Jake White who had two passing touchdowns. Tristan Bennett had two sacks as well as the game tying touchdown on the botched Whitehouse punt. Caden Cross led the team in tackles. Defensive Backs Aaron Flowers, Josh Stephens, and Seth Hyder all had interceptions in the game.

The Jackrabbits (1-0) hit the road again next week to face off against the Midlothian Panthers and their triple option offensive attack.
