Body

Dear Aunt B,

How do I know if my inner voice is telling me the truth or just being my negative self? I sometimes get gut hunches and then I am afraid to act on them. Do you believe we have inner wisdom? If so, how do I get in touch with that wisdom?

Busy Mind

Dear Busy Mind,

I definitely believe in inner wisdom. I believe no one really knows what is right for us but ourself. It can be easier to rely on others’ opinions because we get lazy. We can also trust others sometimes more than we trust ourselves. This is a problem. Do not ever believe some one (ANYONE) knows you better than you know yourself.

How do you get in touch and start to trust your inner wisdom?

Never listen to your inner wisdom when you are in a bad place. Your inner wisdom doesn’t live in that place. Have you heard the quote, “You can’t solve a problem with the same brain that created it”? Some people give this credit to Einstein but research into it being his quote isn’t sure, but it doesn’t matter. Einstein or not, it is so true. What do you think it means? Whatever we focus on we see more. So if I am defining a problem and focusing on it, I will see more problems, more aspects of the problem. We do need to spend some time identifying what the problem is but then move on and change your state. Get yourself in a better mood, get clear on the fact that you want solutions, not more problems. See yourself coming up with solutions, not problems. If you are still in the same mood then get up and come back to the solution when you are in a better state.

If your wisdom is based on fear, it is not your inner wisdom. If your wisdom makes you feel worried or anxious it is not your inner wisdom. If there’s a heaviness to your experience it is not your inner wisdom.

You must quiet the constant rambling that usually goes on in your mind to hear the wisdom that lives there.

Your inner wisdom sounds much different than the rambling voice that seems to be running amuck in your brain. There is a calmness that is present when your inner wisdom is talking. Inner wisdom feels light and calm. Inner wisdom feels like delight not dread. It usually energizes you.

Learning to trust yourself and your wisdom takes some time. Practice listening and feeling for this very special gift. We all have it, but few listen to it. Again, I believe it is because of all the chatter that is always taking place between our ears.

Another interesting characteristic about this inner wisdom is that we usually feel it in our bodies first. I’m sure you have heard the expression, “I just had a gut feeling”. That gut feeling is exactly what we are talking about here. By paying some attention to this and teaching yourself the difference between this feeling and the feeling of fear, you will gain a great ally in yourself.
