Liverpool’s Mayor, Joanne Anderson, labelled the decision “incomprehensible” and expressed strongly that she is “Hugely concerned and disappointed by the decision to delete Liverpool’s World Heritage Status, especially since the decision comes a decade after UNESCO last visited the city and inspected it in person!” UNESCO had added the city to its list in 2004, but it was placed on the organization’s “Heritage in Danger List” in 2021 as a result of fears that modern developments were marring the “docklands” of their historic character!
The United Nations’ Culture Organization stripped the port city of Liverpool, England, of its “World Heritage Status” in a secret ballot to remove the designation because of developments in the city Center and on its historic River Mersey waterfront that “threatened the area’s value,” citing this as detrimental to the sites’ authenticity and integrity.
In common words, the United Nations says that the “Beatles’ hometown is no longer fabulous enough!” Even though it joined the Taj Mahal in India and the pyramids in Egypt and the Tower of London when it was added, Liverpool is now facing losing its status!
While it is exploring its avenues of appeals, Liverpool emphatically states that “it will always be a World Heritage City, with its stunning waterfront and incredible ‘heritage,’ which many cities can only wish they possessed! During the 18th and 19th Centuries, Liverpool was ranked as one of the whole world’s busiest port cities!”
And even though the docks (renowned for their technological advancements and management techniques, which are still used at docks around the world) have declined, they have been replaced and/or restored by/with museums, shops, new housing, restaurants, bars, and other sites of interest and appeal!
However, plans for a new soccer stadium that will cost a modern “fortune” to construct concern UNESCO.
Liverpool is the 3rd place to be removed from the World Heritage List and joins Oman’s Arabian Oryx Sanctuary and Dresden’s Elbe Valled as sites that are being removed for “preservation issues.”
So, the city that gave birth to the BEATLES is in grave danger of losing some of its “official” status! According to the Committee Chairman, of the 20 votes cast, 13 favoured deleting the city; 5 were against the proposal; two ballots were considered invalid!
