The theme of the Alpha Tau meeting was “Popping into Summer!” Members brought lists of their favorite movies, books, and television shows to share and discuss, encouraging each other to try out some of the new choices of entertainment for the summer. The hostess committee, Jerri Coates, Joan Moore, Suzy McCook, Bettye Penny, and Sondra Perry had the library meeting room looking like a movie theater, carrying out the theme. There were black curtains and concessions of popcorn, hotdogs, nachos, candy, and cola. Each table was adorned with a movie poster, and the Hostess Committee members were dressed as ushers in black and white with pill box hats! It was the perfect setting! President Vivian Themer stated, “It was the best meeting we have had all year! It was lots of fun!”
The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p. m. by President Vivian Themer, welcoming guests and thanking the Hostess Committee for a job well done. Vivian Yancey led the pledges, and Joan Moore read the inspiration, which encouraged us to stop complaining and “just do!” First Vice President Cathy Stewart encouraged members to share their talents at our monthly meetings, and Corresponding Secretary Suzy McCook asked members to share family news to be included in the monthly newsletter, The Tales. Recording Secretary Aydee Reyna asked that we vote to accept the April minutes, which we did unanimously, and Treasurer Jerri Coates shared financial information.
President Vivian Themer reviewed old business— reaching our goals for the year and setting new goals for the upcoming year. Our goals for this year were to increase our membership and to help others, including our own members. We ended our year installing three new members, and throughout the year, we delivered care packages and sent cards to our members, who were shut in due to the pandemic. We also delivered “pick me up” treats to our members who are still teaching. We supported “Still Waters,” a faith-based resource center serving youth, adults, and the community in Kaufman County with needed items. Goals were met! Vivian asked members to think about goals for Alpha Tau for the upcoming year and present them to the executive board by August.
After the old business was discussed, Second Vice President/Membership Chair Karrie Pharris presented the new business, which was the installation of new members. The program was beautiful. Karrie introduced each prospective member, and other installation committee members shared why these women were chosen to be members, the purposes of Delta Kappa Gamma, and the responsibilities of becoming a member. After each prospective member took the oath, she was officially accepted into membership and asked to sign the initiates’ register and receive her certificate. New members also received red roses, which is the official flower of Delta Kappa Gamma. New members are Rachel Calvery, Jo Lynn Maddin, and Angela Ricketts.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:30. Alpha Tau will resume meeting again in September on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Kaufman County Library beginning at 5:30. All women educators in Kaufman County are invited to attend a meeting and become a member.
