FINALLY, IT LOOKS LIKE OUR GRANDKIDS’ DISNEY SUMMER IS HERE
This summer we plan to fulfill a promise to our grandkids that we have made for years. We will finally take them to Disneyland, The Magic Kingdom. The question is whether it will be Florida or California.
With school letting out, we would like to take them in June. However, we learned that right now the only park that is open in Florida is Epcot Center and, while we would love to include Epcot as part of the experience, I wouldn’t make the trip without taking them to The Magic Kingdom as well. I would also love to take them to Universal Studios while we are there.
That being said we decided to look at going to Disneyworld in California. That is much more familiar territory since Lori grew up in San Diego. If we took our troop to California, we would love to also take them to Knot’s Berry Farm, The San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park and include visits to the beach, Universal Studios, and The La Brea Tar Pits in downtown Los Angeles. All places we took our kids when they were little. Advance reservations are required on top of extremely expensive ticket prices. A one-day ticket can cost as much as twice as much as a Six Flags/Hurricane Harbor Season pass which is good for an entire year. I even brought up the ticket and reservations page and was ready to close the deal when Lori remembered that Disneyworld in California might only be open to California residents. After a quick check I found that she was right. So, it was back to looking at Florida.
When our kids were younger Lori had to work for a week in Orlando and we were able to take our kids. We stayed in a Hampton Inn Resort and every day we got up for a 7AM time share presentation that included free tickets to an attraction. After that Lori would go to work (she is such a trooper) and the kids and I would go to an amusement park for the day. Another time she had to work in Ft. Lauderdale and on our way home she got to go to Disneyworld and Epcot with us. There was a hurricane brewing in the gulf so at the park there were no lines. It was a great experience.
This summer we are timing our trip when The Magic Kingdom opens. Besides Universal Studios we also plan to take them to Cape Canaveral, the home of NASA.
We found that right now accommodations are cheap, really cheap. On Kayak we found that we can stay in a resort for as low as $59 per night. We have stayed in a Disney hotel before and it was great to just get on a shuttle to go to the park. But now we have UBER or LYFT for that.
I think I am more excited to go than my Grandkids.
