Dear Aunt B Readers,
As we continue on our journey of the fundamentals of taking care of our health, bodies, and mind, I wanted to revisit what exactly are fundamentals and why should we care about them anyway.
According to the Oxford English dictionary, a fundamental is a central or primary rule or principle on which something is based. Fundamentals are also considered the simplest and most important elements of any topic. I would say fundamentals are the basics or essential skills needed to master or become successful in any endeavour.
Like I mentioned earlier, fundamentals of each of the sports are what come into my mind when using the word. I remember my husband teaching my son the fundamentals of basketball. I just recently listened to a podcast that said there are three fundamentals of golf that if you master you can beat most any of your golfing partners. They included the driving, pitching and putting. There are fundamentals of reading. Fundamentals of reading may include phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and spelling. It is easy to see that if these fundamentals were mastered an individual would become a great reader.
So why the attention on fundamentals of good living? It seems to me that some of the world has lost or never really been taught these fundamen tals. I believe we are all so busy living these busy lives that somewhere along the way we have lost touch with the essentials. Life used to be simpler, no doubt. Also there is little to no doubt that it will ever return to a simpler time so it is our responsibility to take steps to incorporate better living skills for us to master our best life. In other words life will not do this for you. You must decide and make the changes needed. Don’t be confused by what I say; you don’t have to do any of this. However your life will catch up to you. Your body will take much of the nonsense (bad food, little sleep, no movement, high stress) we throw at it. It will take it for a while but when it wears out you will be left with consequences you don’t desire.
The final fundamental we are going to talk about next week is sleep. Dang it guys, sleep is the final frontier. We need good sleep. The ramifications of getting poor sleep or not enough are so big. We will discuss it in depth. Then you’re on your own to set up some fundamentals in your life.
