Not long ago, I told you about hearing a call from across the Kroger parking lot and seeing my buddy, Lawrence Higgins, striding towards me and then hearing him say, “Themer, we are going to be seventy years old during this next year!” I sarcastically thanked him for reminding me!
Well, we are in good company, since the three folks in the headline above have hit the same milestone.
MELISSA MANCHESTER is a well-known and successful singer, born in 1951 in the Bronx area of New York City, and famous for her hit songs, “Midnight Blue,” “Walk On By” (an update of the Warwick song), and “You Should Hear How She Talks about You.” She is a singer/song-writer, good on the keyboard, and an accomplished actress, who began singing at age 15 with commercial “jingles” and early on was associated with Barry Manilow and Bette Midler. Manchester is a GRAMMY winner among many other awards and is best known for “pop,” “easy listening,” and “adult contemporary” music. She is still actively writing and recording at this time.
JANE SEYMOUR is best known as an actress, such as in roles for Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and as a “Bond Girl.” She says her best role is as “OMA” to her six grandchildren. She was born in 1951 in Middlesex, England, and is now considered mainly a British-American actress. Notable performances came in Live and Let Die, Somewhere in Time, East of Eden, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Onassis: The Richest Man in the World, War and Remembrance, Wedding Crashers. She is an “Emmy” and “Golden Globe” winner and has a STAR on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Seymour has been featured three times in Playboy Magazine, the final time at age 67, which made her the oldest woman to appear—and is now a citizen of the U. S.
KURT RUSSELL is an “instrument-rated pilot,” who really loves flying and was born in 1951 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He is an American actor/ producer, who began his television acting career at age 12 in a Western Series, called The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters, which did not last long! Russell became a Walt Disney Company signee and one of its top stars of the 1970s. Some memorable movies in which he appeared/ starred were Silkwood, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, the television film—Elvis, Overboard, Tango and Cash, Tombstone, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Christmas Chronicles, and I could continue on, such as being in Gilligan’s Island at age 13! Besides being an accomplished actor, he was a member of the Air National Guard for seven years and a pretty good minor league professional baseball player until suffering a severe shoulder injury. Kurt Russell is still an active actor/ producer today and has won an “Emmy,” “Golden Globe,” and a “Star” on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I guess you can tell, he is one of my favorites!
