On Monday, March 8th, Representative Keith Bell (R-Forney) filed House Bill 3211 to amend the Texas education requirements to expand the civics curriculum for grades K-12. HB 3211 would ensure that every student in Texas public schools receives a comprehensive education on the importance of democracy, America’s founding principles, and being an engaged and informed citizen of Texas and the United States.
Representative Bell offered the following statement: “Our students deserve to have the opportunity to develop values that encourage participation, pride, and patriotism in American ideals and institutions. These shared American values are what hold our communities together and create citizens that will make a positive difference in our state and country.”
Governor Greg Abbott announced in his State of the State address that civics education is one of his top priorities for the 87th Session and offered this quote on the importance of passing HB 3211: “If we expect the next generation of Texans to keep Texas the best state in the nation, we must teach them what makes the Lone Star State so exceptional. This legislation will bolster civics education in our classrooms and help ensure that every Texas child learns the values of freedom, good governance, and patriotism. I thank Representative Bell for filing this legislation, and I look forward to signing this bill into law and strengthening civics education for Texas students.”
Civics education is essential to the survival of democracy. HB 3211 provides the attention that these patriotic principles should receive in our schools, shaping Texas’ future leaders.
