The nation’s capital is a very different place than the rest of the country. People who spend too much time there often lose sight of what is actually happening across America. Unfortunately, President Joe Biden and his advisors have fallen victim to this.
Millions of illegal immigrants are expected to pour across our southern border this year in the wake of President Biden’s drastic changes to immigration enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security estimates at least 117,000 of those migrants will be unaccompanied children. Nonetheless, President Biden refuses to acknowledge the crisis taking place at our border.
Democrats in Texas have publicly recognized what is going on. State Senator Juan Hinojosa (D-McAllen) told the national news that he believes a border crisis is underway. Despite having access to detailed intelligence from the border, our Commander-in-Chief has managed to ignore the facts and disregard warnings from leaders on both side of the aisle.
Perhaps President Biden refuses to recognize the border crisis because the situation is entirely a consequence of his own actions.
Since his first day in office, President Biden has consistently reversed numerous effective Trump-era immigration policies. His administration has halted construction of the border wall, revoked the national emergency declaration at the border, resumed “catch-and-release” protocols, and ended the hugely beneficial “Remain in Mexico” program. Thousands of immigrants have mobilized in the following weeks. US Customs and Border Patrol estimates over 3,000 aliens cross the border each day.
There is little doubt those figures demonstrate an immigration crisis. But acknowledging the reality would mean President Biden admitting his border policy decisions were deeply misguided. He would be forced to recognize that President Trump was right – something most at the White House cannot or will not ever admit. It’s shameful that residents of border states like Texas will pay the price for their pride.
I sent a letter to President Biden with over 30 House Republicans urging him to recognize the border crisis, reinstate the national emergency at the border, and reactivate common-sense immigration controls. It is time for this White House to wake up. I will continue sounding the alarm until they do.
