“Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”

---Anonymous Greek Proverb

In the next couple of weeks, spring planting will begin in earnest. As every grower knows, when we plant seeds, what we really plant is hope; hope that the weather will be kind, hope that the bugs won’t be too bad, and hope that it was all worthwhile to begin with. Last year, the week of Thanksgiving--which is when you’re supposed to plant them--my husband and I planted Texas bluebonnet seeds. They finally sprouted last week, after the snow had melted and the ground was gently warmed. We were afraid they wouldn’t sprout, since you normally see the plants start showing foliage in mid-to-late January. November to March: that’s six-month’s worth of hope.

Many times with the teacher-requested grants, it’s easier to notice the growth of the students that were first touched by the grant in the classroom. But that’s not why we give the grant--we give the grant so that the students next year (and the year after!) can enjoy the fruits of our planting. That’s also why the Foundation gives dual-credit scholarships to current FISD students. We know that if we plant the seed now (in little ole Forney, Texas!) we can grow a beautiful flower for the future.

The Foundation was built on hope, too. Designed by the original five founders to help FISD students go to college, we’ve grown; now we help students on every level, because we know that a good kindergarten class means a good college class. We plant our tiny little seeds with hope, and they grow.

Won’t you help plant some hope in Forney? Please go to www.forneyisdfoundation.org and see how easy it can be to plant for the future!
