Not a Joke!
Body

This is a real event and happened close to a year ago in neighboring Seagoville, Texas, at the Federal Low Security Prison (fewer than 2,000 male inmates) just off C. F. Hawn Freeway in the southeastern area of Dallas County. When a “friend” first told me about this, I “disbelieved” him and thought he was just repaying me for various jokes and tricks I have perpetrated the past fifty or so years; however, after sporadic research and casual questions at the post office, I do now totally believe the event took place in March of last year.

In fact, an internet posting on “pressreader” the past few days backs up the story.

Details: A Dallas man (I am not using his name in case he is related to someone in my family or a friend’s family.) is in custody, and a trial date has been set for the end of February. Supposedly the accused has more than ten previous felony convictions and is now facing charges of assault upon a Federal Officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, and carrying/brandishing/discharging a firearm (.40 caliber pistol) during/in relation to a violent crime.

The accused pleads that on March 27, 2020, he was being threatened with death and/or serious injury at the time of the incident and climbed over the security fence perimeter while wearing a wig and dressed as a woman, who was carrying a purse; however, witnesses say that no one could be seen chasing him!

After climbing over, the suspect ran through the prison yard, attempting to go into the prison lobby. Then, when guards tried to stop him from entering, he fired a pistol at the ground after first aiming at the prison guards! After firing the weapon, he did manage to enter the lobby but was arrested once inside. He was found to be in possession of crack cocaine (in his purse).

Interesting to note, the “prison crasher” came into the prison lobby after the officers had moved back from the door (after the gun was fired) and proceeded to lie down upon the floor, where he remained until he was secured and cuffed. His attorney alleges that the gun does not belong to the defendant, who had been assaulted right before he climbed the prison fence, and that the attacker of the defendant is still at large!

Another detail of this case is that a Federal Judge last year stated that this “defendant has a considerable criminal history and a record of substance abuse and mental health problems.” However, Government authorities maintain that “acting bizarrely or irrationally while committing criminal offenses does not excuse criminal behavior.”

Being a Law and Order television show watcher, I am very interested in the outcome of this strange-but-true story and wonder what D. A., Jack McCoy, and Detectives, Ed Green and Lennie Briscoe, would have to say about this case!

If I hear of any important outcomes, I will try to relate a final conclusion in the future.
