All the teams that advanced to the 2020—2021, 5A and 6A final two play-off games towards becoming State Champions, had top notch records—no “unexpecteds,” except for some local expectations! The final game for each competing match-up appeared “even” on paper. Here is a wrap-up of what resulted! Congratulations to all teams everywhere who competed this year at any level. STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
Class 5A, Division I Final: Denton Ryan 59 defeats Cedar Park 14—Denton Ryan had been ranked #1 from the beginning of the season and never fell from that lofty rank, even when they were quarantined for two weeks in October! This was their first “ring” since winning back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002 and getting oh, so close, the past four years! The Denton crew took quick advantage of three turn-overs in the 2nd quarter and “kept the heat on” from that point! This was Cedar Park’s 4th title game in school history.
Class 5A, Division II Final: Aledo 56 defeats Crosby 21—Aledo is 291 wins—42 losses since winning its first title in 1998; this is their record-setting 10th State #1 Trophy! Crosby, which opened the game with a 14—7 lead in the 1st quarter, was playing in its first State Title berth in 60 years! Aledo, although starting a little slowly, had amassed a 42—14 lead with seven minutes still to go in the 3rd quarter and continued to roll from then on.
Class 6A, Division I Final: Austin Westlake 52 defeats Southlake Carroll 34—In this game that pitted two coaches named “Dodge” (father Todd and son Riley) going up against each other, 1st downs were relatively even with Westlake on top 23—20; rushing was very lopsided, however, with Westlake way ahead at 295 net yards to 50 net for Carroll; passing, though, saw Carroll on top with 351 net yards to 220 net for Westlake. In the end, though, Austin Westlake came out on top over Southlake Carroll to post back-to-back State Championships!
Class 6A, Division II Final: Katy 51 defeats Cedar Hill 14—Katy’s ground game dominated offensively, and its defense allowed only 245 yards all night to gain them their 9th State Title, 2nd alltime in state history to Aledo’s 10th title this season. So, now, both Cedar Hill and Katy have two wins each in their head-to-head combats in State Title Games historically. Katy had “rung up” 34 unanswered points before Cedar Hill finally notched a touchdown and PAT to break their “scoring ice.”
