Texas Tech University’s Office of Continuing & Professional Education is bringing the globally recognized Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) wine certificate courses to East Texas.
The courses will be held at the Jeffersonian Institute, location of the Texas Tech Office of Professional Education & Academic Advising. Two courses are available over the weekend of Nov. 13-15, using the curriculum from the prestigious WSET based in London. These certificate courses are globally recognized and part of Texas Tech’s nationally renowned viticulture program.
“Jefferson is a natural location to host this educational opportunity debut in East Texas, with several wineries and more than 20 bed-andbreakfast establishments located here,” said program coordinator Brian Brooks. “This course is very popular with wine enthusiasts and is a well-known milestone for those who participate in wine tourism.’’
The Level 1 course is for wine consumers looking for challenging wine classes, to know more about the main grape varieties and about food and wine matching. The foundation wine education class will introduce them to the main styles of wine available, wine storage and service and the pairing of food and wine. It also is a good course for students beginning their first job in wine-related businesses.
The Level 2 course provides training in wine production, wine tasting, wine service and the wines of the world to underpin job skills for those in the food and beverage, wine wholesale and retail, and hospitality industries as well as wine enthusiasts who wish to acquire more in-depth knowledge. The courses cover a range of topics, including wine service and storage, wine tasting, wine production, and the local wines of the U.S., France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. It includes a study manual, lectures, guided tastings, and an exam.
Upon passing the exam, students will receive a certificate and pin to recognize their achievement from the prestigious WSET.
