I was in 4th Grade; Mr. James T. Moses was our Principal; our teacher was Mrs. Lena Jones, and when I was out of classes for almost six weeks with mumps and then meningitis, she made several house calls to keep me caught up on class assignments.
Our SCHOOL BOARD consisted of Jack Venner (President), Conway Senter (Vice-President), O. J. Ledbetter (Secretary)—J. L. Helm, O. V. Stark, Jack Pippins, and T. R. Criswell (Members).
Student Council Members were Douglas Bush, President, and Leta Nan Anderson, Secretary—Also, Freshmen, Janis Duckworth and Bill Berry—Sophomores, Janice Tune and Don Sline—Juniors, Glenda Morran and Joe Brummett. Faculty Sponsor was Patsy Baker.
Majorettes, who still twirled the “fire batons” at halftime, were Marcia Whittemore, Carol Criswell (Drum Major), Carol Sline, Carol Tillery, Kaye Tanner, Evelyn Duckworth, and Jane Brummett. **Carol Sline lived in the big Compton House across the alley from the Themer house, and I loved to watch her practice the fire baton twirling as it was approaching nightfall. I thought she was the “greatest” neighbor then!**
Cheerleaders were Head Cheerleader Donna Rice, Sarah Lee Cates, Elaine Sanders, Bettye Duckworth, and Gail Richman.
A really big deal to most of the football players was the election of the FOOTBALL SWEETHEART. The nominees were Barbara Vineyard (winner), Elaine Sanders, Leta Nan Anderson, and Carol Tillery. Four lucky football players were their escorts out onto the field at halftime for the crowning.
Mr. and Miss F. H. S. were J. B. Morris and Glenda Morran, and Mr. and Miss Senior were Leta Anderson and Billy Penney.
Coronation was also a BIG DEAL, as the Junior and Senior Classes vied to make their nominees the winners by “amassing the most money” to go towards the Junior-Senior Banquet. The winners were the SENIORS, who crowned Billy Penney and Mamie Nell Ford as King and Queen.
Getting back to FOOTBALL, our guys were 1960 Bi-District Co-Champs, being unable to actually compete in a play-off game as a result of an accident on the way to the site.
From that team, Don Montgomery was honored as the first “Forney Boy” to make “Honorable Mention All-American” and “First Team All-State” as a starting center.
Coaches of that team were Johnnie Henderson, Randall Canup, and C. O. Phillips.
Captains were Jerry McCuistion, J. B. Morris, Don Montgomery, and Dennis Hensley.
Unsung heroes, the Managers/Trainers, were James Hutto, Gary Anderson, Glenn Lee, and Joe Brummett.
Please return next week for final looks at the 1960 F. H. S. scene.
