The television, internet, and DMN all recently backed up what I have, for many years, proclaimed as FACT to you—THERE ARE RATTLESNAKES IN THIS AREA!

At the end of September, one of my favorite weathermen was bitten by a rattlesnake as he was being a good citizen and volunteering to pull the “demon ragweed” at the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center in Cedar Hill.

According to a quote by David Finfrock, “It doesn’t hurt much and must not have injected much venom.” However, he was kept under observation at an emergency room and “treated.”

He also recounted that usually rattlers will warn, but he says he did not hear anything from this one as it bit through his jeans. (He owns a ranch in another county and says he wears boots when out and about there—but did not do so when working at the Audubon Center!)

Finfrock has been with Channel 5 since the mid-1970s and was promoted to Chief Meteorologist in 1991. He now is at least semi-retired as of 2018 but sometimes helps out the Channel 5 Station when another meteorologist is sick or on vacation.

On a personal note, I have been telling Forneyites about an acquaintance who lived near our Old Military Trail home, and he told me he took his “Forney dog” (either dying or already dead) to a local veterinarian, who was interested in the malady and did some testing. The doctor was surprised to find the cause of death as RATTLESNAKE toxin. The owner swore he had not had the dog away from this area for quite some time!

On another note, I remember the first time I saw Mr. Finfrock on the Channel 5 News when I was watching it with my Dad— and we both kept wondering where Weather Legend, Harold Taft, was that night and who the “new guy” might be, as we critiqued his style and techniques. David Finfrock is now the “legend,” just as was Mr. Taft that night!

To conclude, he was educated at Texas A&M University, has been married to Shari for 40-plus years, has a son and a daughter, and was born in 1953, which makes him younger than this writer, who is glad that this excellent weatherman ultimately won the battle with the RATTLER!
