Waylon, Mary Anne, Ella, and Luke invited MiMi and Grandpa to go with them to the Arboretum and promised that it would be safe! They were correct, as limited attendance and social distancing and masks were the rule, so don’t be afraid to go if you are invited! And, if you are “distanced,” you may pull down your masks for photos.
In addition to the Children’s Adventure Garden offerings, IT IS PUMPKIN TIME! As the informative advertisings promised, “There are thousands (Millions, I would venture!) of colorful, fall-blooming flowers and spectacular displays in ‘Pumpkin Village’ of more than 90,000 pumpkins (Twice that many, I would venture.) and squash and gourds from the ‘Pumpkin
Capital of Texas,’ Floydada.”
Visitors can also try to solve the journey of the “hay bales maze,” which is children friendly, and take picture-after-picture in front of various 20-feet-tall “pumpkin houses.” Our Grandchildren thought they were “AMAZING.”
And we all, Grandparents, Parents, and (most importantly) the KIDS all marveled at the thousands of plants and flowers and trees and tried to figure out what types they were with out reading the placards under the “beds” and along the walkways. Luke told Grandpa that there were
“more trees than even in Grandpa’s back yard!”
There are numerous spots to stop for rests or longer looks, and snacks and restrooms are available—as is a true restaurant.
I don’t know how much the tickets cost our Children or how much we paid for our after-Arboretum outing, but I am sure that even “old cheapskate/thrifty” Grandpa would have been willing to pay double or triple. And, I haven’t even mentioned the wonderful brass “sculptings” that made great picture opportunities, such as the “fisherman,” by whom the “kids” and I sat and tried to imitate.
The outing was magnificent! Viv and Don are already planning a return visit for one of the wintertime special exhibits/offerings, and we will hope to see the two “pumpkin girls” (dressed as little pumpkins) there as “Christmas figures.”
