As Forney’s population continues to grow, local residents are no strangers to traffic congestion. With many of the area’s major roadways under the control of the State of Texas, many needed improvements come on the timeline of the State rather than the desires of local cities and citizens. In 2019, the Texas Department of Transportation held several public hearings, announcing planned projects and improvements for the area. To the relief of many area drivers, TxDOT will soon be beginning the work to make our daily commutes a little easier.

In a press release dated October 13, 2020, the Texas Department of Transportation announced that it is scheduled to begin local road improvements starting this week. Two current projects that could directly affect Forney area residents are the FM 429 Project and another phase of the I-20 Pavement Rehabilitation and Bridge Replacement Project.

The FM 429 Project will include reconstruction of pavement and adding shoulders to FM 429 beginning at Interstate 20 and continuing until it reaches US Highway 80. This $6.2 million project is slated to begin this week and will hopefully be complete by the fall of 2021.

The second local project, a continuation of the $22 million I-20 rehabilitation for Kaufman County that began in 2019, started at 7:00 p.m. on October 20. For approximately one month, the westbound left lane of I-20 beginning at FM 148 will be closed for one mile. Upon the completion of the left lane, the right lane in the same location will then be closed for approximately one month as well. During this two month period, both directions of Las Lomas Parkway / County Road 305 at I-20 will be closed as well.

Drivers who frequent these areas should plan ahead for probable delays during construction. As always, road improvement projects are subject to the cooperation of the unpredictable Texas weather, so the stated timelines are estimates and these projects will be completed weather permitting.
