The Pirates were determined to not have a repeat of last week’s game. Senior night was celebrated pregame before the players took to the tunnel. Joshua started out with the first possession of the game going three and out. Austin Cruise led the Pirates down to the twenty-three-yard line before being stopped by the Owls defense. Sophomore kicker Brandon Perez nailed a forty-yard field goal through the uprights to put the Pirates up 3-0. The rest of the first quarter was controlled by the Owls. Joshua scored on three straight possessions making the score 3-17 at the end of the first.
Crandall’s run and pass game came alive in the second quarter. Chris Abron went off for over 180 yards on the ground and three touchdowns in the game. Then junior quarterback Jamonte Gordon-West took control of the offense in the second with a thirteen-yard touchdown run straight down the gut of the Owl defense. Crandall was still down at the half 23-24.
“We have got to start faster,” Pirate head coach Kyle Hardin said. “I believe we did a good job of making adjustments at half time to come out the way we did in the third quarter.”
Crandall came out of the locker room determined to change the outcome of the game. The Pirate offense and defense dominated the second half. Abron started it off with his third touchdown run of fifty-one-yards. The strong run attack opened up the passing game for Gordon-West. He took full advantage connecting with outside receiver Javon Reedy twice for touchdowns with 75 yards receiving on the night. The score after three quarters of play was Crandall 46-24.
The fourth quarter only saw one score by the Owl offense. When it was all said and done Crandall had 502 total yards of offense for six touchdowns and a field goal. Winning by the score of 46-30.
Next week will serve as Crandall’s open week due to Sulphur Springs varsity team having a confirmed COVID-19 case. That means Crandall will travel to North Forney on October 23rd for their first district game of the season.
