Today, (Monday) I was at 7 11 on FM 548 filling up cans with diesel for my tractor when I noticed a beautiful sight. To the north across the field and above the trees along Mustang Creek, I saw a beautiful sight. It was the steeple of the First Baptist Church of Forney. It occurred to me that the sight of that lone steeple silhouetted against a blue sky on a cool Autumn morning serves as a metaphor for what is good about Forney. Of course, from another vantage point you might see one of the many Churches in Forney and they are an important part of the Forney Skyline.
From my position I started looking around at what else I might see that add to that skyline. The first thing I noticed was the light at the football Stadium beside Forney High School. I turned the other direction and saw the lights of the baseball fields in the Forney Community Park. Finally, in the distance I saw a huge crane where two new schools are being built along FM 741.
It occurred to me that in a way those three iconic items represent Forney’s past, present and future.
First, the primary thing that influenced my wife and I to move to Forney and raise a family was the strong sense of faith shared by a majority of our community. With our first visit to the Forney Church of Christ we found a group of believers who welcomed us as if we had always been there. Over the years I have gleaned that sense of fraternity exists at most churches in Forney.
The crane in the distance represents the sense of community that exists in Forney. Even though we didn’t have kids when we first moved here, we were drawn to the quality of Forney schools and the fact that Forney was not only invested in our schools financially, they were invested physically and emotionally.
The football and baseball field lights represent the sense of family that exists in our community. Football in Forney is a terrific experience that I used to enjoy a lot more before I started traveling all over the country. Youth sports like baseball, soccer and pee wee football are the very definition of family activity with parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, sisters and brothers filling bleachers and lawn chairs to cheer on the young athletes.
Though Forney has changed a lot, and I mean a lot, in the decades we have lived here, it is my prayer that the Forney Skyline will continue to serve as a metaphor for what we are as a community. We are defined by Faith, Family and Football/Baseball.
