The State of Texas has had some form of standardized testing as far back as 1980. Over the years the originally simple system used to gauge children’s progress in our public schools has morphed into what many describe as a high-stakes and highstress series of tests. The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, began statewide in the 2011-2012 school year. In recent years, lawmakers and various organizations such as the Texas State Teachers Association have expressed concerns over the current assessment system, with many lobbying to remove the testing altogether.
Earlier this year, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Abbott requested a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education and was granted such, allowing Texas schools to waive the Spring 2020 testing requirements while still receiving the federal funding in full. This waiver took just a few days to receive, and its arrival on the scene allowed educators and parents to breathe a sigh of relief during the beginning months of the pandemic-related orders.
