As kids in the area have been restless due to the stay-at-home orders in place, neighborhoods all around town have been working to creatively engage residents while maintaining social distance and safety.

Last Friday, April 24, local resident Chad Huffhines led a parade of water balloonwielding trucks throughout the neighborhood he calls home. Each of the 15+ vehicles made their ways to nearly fifty homes in the Trails of Chestnut Meadow which signed up to participate in the community’s first drive by water balloon war.

With warmer weather upon us, Huffhines came up with the idea in an effort to bring his neighborhood together to cool off and have fun without getting too close. After presenting his idea to neighbors through Facebook, participants responded stating whether they either wanted to launch balloons from their vehicles or build a fort to defend their house. After a few days of preparation and about an hour and a half that Friday evening, thousands of water balloons had been thrown, neighbors of all ages were happy, and the plan was deemed a huge success.

Ten-year-old Abigail Overbey, who stood defense with her siblings over their house, declared it “the best event ever!” She said, “Going outside, throwing water balloons, and getting our clothes, faces, and hair wet was awesome!”

“It was so fun!” her younger sister, eight-year-old Rachel, agreed. “I got hit, like, 100 times.”

“Everybody had a blast,” Chad commented. And after receiving such great feedback from the neighborhood, Huffhines hinted that there is likely to be a second and similar event coming up soon.
