St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church now hosts a monthly food truck for the community. In line with the mission of Catholic Charities of Dallas (CCD) to address the root causes of poverty, hunger, and homelessness while providing support, resources, education, and inspiration, St. Martin of Tours has joined the effort to fight hunger in our area.
The CCD Mobile Community Food Pantry, through a partnership with North Texas Food Bank, visits the parish on the first Saturday of every month from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. In accordance with the social distancing recommendations from the CDC, families and individuals coming to receive services remain in their vehicles at all times and are welcomed by members of the church donning appropriate face coverings and gloves. Led by Fr. James Yamauchi, the team serves those in attendance in a drive-through style, delivering boxes of food to the trunks, backseats, or cargo areas of vehicles.
During the COVID-19 crisis, no family in need will be turned away. As the website for St. Martin of Tours states, “Living out our faith goes beyond attending mass on weekends.” It is the desire of the Church to ensure that no one within their reach is required to go without these most basic necessities.
At the April event, the group of volunteers put over 3,500 pounds of food, including fresh meats, fresh produce, dry goods, and juices, into the hands of 175 families. The response was a direct representation of the need that people are experiencing during this time of job loss and uncertainty. A line of cars formed before the Mobile Food Pantry had even fully set up, and all food items were distributed within two hours of its opening.
The next local CCD Mobile Community Food Pantry will be held Saturday, May 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 9470 CR 213, Forney.
