The arrival of the Coronavirus, also known as COVID 19, has disrupted every aspect of living for people across the globe. This unprecedented world health event serves as a reminder that we should be prepared for anything and that we are never prepared for everything. As education officials determine what to do next and how to do it, students, parents and teachers await information on when schools are closing and when, or if, we will be returning this school year.

There is the real possibility that Texas students could be out of school up to 6 months if school remains closed for the rest of the year. That’s a lot of lost instruction time. Parents will likely pick up much of the slack while school is out. For the parents who aren’t confident in their ability to lead their children’s learning at home, here are a few suggestions that should provide some academic time for the children and minimize regression from being away from school for so long.

•Consider developing a schedule for your children to follow each day. Ideally, they should maintain their normal school day sleep/ wake hours.

•Have a variety of learning activities out for your children to choose from. Worksheets printed from the internet, books/eBooks/audiobooks, educational videos etc.

•Give 20 minutes of work each hour. Allow the children to decide how they want to spend the time. All at once? Five minutes four times?
