The first round of state testing is around the corner. Countless students are bemoaning the dreaded testing and the seemingly endless reading that will follow. For many students, the reading will simply be a seamless extension of their normal activities. For others, reading will be a dreadful experience they will work diligently to avoid.
Unfortunately, many students are reading below grade level and struggle significantly in the classroom. With some students who experience reading difficulty, the anticipation of being asked to read can result in preemptive actions to avoid being asked. These actions manifest as behavior problems, tantrums, angry outbursts, disruption of instruction or even complaints of illness. Non-readers frequently go to great lengths to avoid having to read in class.
