The Responsibility is Ours
Body

As a proponent of education, I pay attention to trends in education, political promises and the current state of education, especially as it relates to special education. I learned long ago to not wait for the government to make public education a priority. There are lots of promises of school improvement and school choice sliding across political platforms. However, a review of the last fifty plus years of education reform and the statistical results of students’ achievement reveals the government is not who should be educating the nation’s students. Education, public or private, requires parents to do their part to net optimal outcomes in our nation’s schools.

A child’s first and most influential teacher is his or her parents. The preparation a child receives at home should start before birth and continue indefinitely. This preparation has an invaluable impact on student achievement throughout the entire school experience. Children who are not school age should be read to everyday. Teaching them letters, numbers, shapes and colors will give them an edge in kindergarten.
