The UKRAINE has been mentioned so much recently in news reports and, some would say, in “fake news reports,” that I decided to do a little research to refresh and broaden my ideas about the area. I was helped along by internet sites and television news reports. The Encyclopedia Britannica has been the most helpful, but just a starting point for deep investigation.

UKRAINE is bordered by the following: RUSSIA to the east—MOLDOVA and ROMANIA to the southwest—HUNGARY, SLOVA- KIA, and POLAND to the west—BELARUS to the north. Back to the Russian border, the greatest separation from Russia is by the Kerch Strait, which connects the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea. If this does not paint a better picture in your mind than it did in mine, I have supplied a photo to help with visualization!

As a land mass, the Ukraine is in the Russian Plain’s (East European Plain land area) southwest portion. It is almost totally level plain area close to 600 feet above sea level, and its “mountain” area is basically on the border lands and covers about 5% or so of the country’s total mass.
