The Teachers’ Lounge
The trajectory of public education has changed immensely in the 14 years I have been teaching. When I began my teaching career, I was excited to have the privilege of teaching children and impacting lives. I had a set vision of what I wanted to accomplish and took my role as an educator seriously. Little did I know, I entered a system with conflicting agendas that would try my resolve to educate children. More than a decade later, I left public schools, but not public education. I have taken on a new role that includes imparting knowledge of the school system and helping parents advocate for their children in public schools.
My most important message to parents is “Know for yourself.” I was a student during the time when parents trusted schools to educate their children. If a teacher or administrator said something, it was respected by parents. As far as I can remember, students were taught and learned although I know some slipped through the cracks somewhere.
Contemporary education is in a place where parental awareness and involvement is necessary, especially for children who receive special education or related services. Public schools abandoned the social model and have moved to a business model. Educated citizens are no longer the product produced in schools, scores and ranking are. The hyper-focus on standardized testing drives school function.
