Bullying behavior is not new but has made a necessary resurgence in the media especially considering the tragic consequences that follow when young people are bullied in school or online and see no way out of the abuse. Bullying is pervasive in America’s schools from K-12, but certainly is not limited to students. Many non-educators may not realize that bullying is a major issue between administrators and teachers. The fallout from such negative interaction between teachers and administrators affects directly student achievement and campus morale.
Many teachers suffer silently when being bullied by administration. The power administration wields over teachers includes the ability to terminate their employment. That power successfully silences outcries many abused teachers would otherwise make. The reasons administrators bully teachers seems to be locked in the psyche of these administrators and often mirrors the bullying behavior of students.
In 14 years of teaching, I have dealt with three bully administrators. One was more deceitful than bullying, leaving me concerned that a well-crafted lie could affect my job. The second was her assistant. It appeared he was doing her bidding with intermittent harassment and calls to the office.
