In 1996, Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Texas Wildlife Association created the Texas Youth Hunt Program (TYHP). Their hunts are built around teaching youth how to hunt safely, legally, and ethically. The hunts also show the students the importance that landowners and hunters play in the conservation of our state’s natural resources.

Recently, Forney youth, Aaron Stevens participated in two of the TYHP hunts. The first was a dove hunt on the historic King Ranch in South Texas. The second hunt was a mule deer and Audad sheep hunt on the Apache Ranch near Van Horn in West Texas.

Aaron had taken the appropriate hunting safety course and made application for the hunts. After applying for the hunts, his name was picked through a lottery drawing. The nominal fee was paid, and he was ready to go. The fee pays for everything including room and board for the weekend.
