The Crandall Pirates came into Thursday night ready for redemption after losing in the first round of the playoffs to a tough Henderson team last year. The Pirates were coming off of a big victory against Athens last week, and were ready to take on the Kilgore Bulldogs in Athens, Texas at Bruce Field.

Kilgore started off with the ball. The Bulldogs came fast out of the gate with a twelve-play drive that took them all the way down to Crandall’s own nine yard line. On the thirteenth play of the drive, Kilgore’s running back fumbled the ball, and the Pirates defensive end Calob Davis came up with the fumble recovery. Crandall’s defense would play a key role in the game with a total of five turnovers on the night. The score was 0-0 after one quarter of play.

Much of the second quarter would be a defensive battle resulting in punts or turnover on downs. The Pirates defense stepped up big with 3:30 left in the second quarter. Kilgore was driving down the field, and on Crandall’s own fortyyard line, when the quarterback threw an interception to Crandall’s Luke Spitzer. This was the spark that the Pirates offense needed to get something going. For the first two plays of the series, Coach Cary sent out his starting quarterback, Holt Reese, to run the plays. On the third play of the drive, freshman standout Samuel Omosigho came in to run the wildcat offense which has been quite successful throughout the season. All it took was one play as Omosigho took it to the house on a sixty-one yard touchdown run to make the game 7-0. Kilgore was attempting to score before halftime, but was stopped by the Pirates’ Mason Daugherty who came up with the interception.
