Chris Bailey, Andrew Bailey and Aaron Stevens participated in a Boy Scout Equestrian Venturing Crew at the Philmont National Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. The event included about 15 students from the Dallas, Fort Worth area. Venturing Scouting is operated through Venturing Crews, units of youth and advisors that meet on set schedules and plan activities based on the students passions and interests. The host crew was from a Mesquite Boy Scout chapter sponsored by the First Prebyterian Church in Mesquite, Texas under the leadership of Allen Clark.

The students prepared for their Venturing Crew over several weeks by taking part in monthly trail rides and volunteering to care for the horses at the Clements Scout Ranch in Athens, Texas. The group arrived at Philmont on June

13. The students were then assigned their horse. They packed their supplies into saddle bags. The next morning they set off on their 9 day journey on the mountain trails. Each evening they made camp and prepared for the next days journey.
