Pamela Musketness and Dottie Durrett, both members of the King’s Fort Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), share a passion for preserving history. These two ladies spend much of their free time cleaning and restoring Historical Markers throughout Texas. With thousands of Historical Markers across the state, though, this duo has their work cut out for them.
A leadership project through the DAR spurred this movement, which now has Musketness and Durrett working in conjunction with the Texas Historical Commission and traveling the state to refresh weathered Historical Markers.
Recently, the ladies paid a visit to the Forney Messenger office to work on the building’s marker. The process, which involves sanding, washing, painting, and using paint thinner to reveal each individual character on the marker, can be a long and tedious process. However, this does not dissuade Pamela and Dottie from the invaluable job of making history visible through the Historical Markers. “If you can see it, you can read it. If you can read it, you will learn it. If you can learn it, then you will share it,” Dottie says. “And that is how history is meant to be.”
