ATHENS—The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens is offering free admission and free fishing for the whole family June 1 to celebrate Free Fishing Day and kick off National Fishing and Boating Week.
Anglers under 18 will also receive a free entry into a catfish tournament being held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the TFFC casting pond. All tackle and bait will be furnished and prizes will be awarded for the top three fish caught by weight in three youth age categories (0-6, 7-12 and 13-17). Door prizes will also be awarded each hour for all entries in the tournament.
Free hot dogs, chip and drinks will be served from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. by employees of the Athens Walmart Supercenter.
Other fun activities included with free admission include seeing a diver hand feed fish; taking a tram tour around the hatchery ponds; walking the wetlands trail; shopping for a Father’s Day gift in the Gift Shop and watching a live alligator feeding at 3:30 p.m.
