The myth of teachers’ free time

With about three weeks of school left, the signs of exhaustion and burnout are clearly showing on many faces on campus. Not the kind of exhaustion that can be remedied in the Starbucks drive-thru. I am talking about the kind of exhaustion that can cause an educator to sleep 14 hours straight on a sunny Saturday, then wake up considering a new career. While Saturday is technically a day off for teachers, in reality, it is often another work day. The concept that teachers have free time is a myth every teacher could debunk if only they had the time.
I would venture to say that teachers work twice has hard as everyone else on their days off. Teachers have lives, families, homes and other responsibilities like other employed adults. They have guests for the holidays, events at church, volunteer in the community or a host of other activities that command their time and attention.
