The number one complaint among residents in Forney is the traffic congestion. In what used to be a two-traffic light town, the rapid and continued growth in the area has led to congestion in many of our major thoroughfares. Try as the City may to stay ahead of the curve with roadway improvements, there are many obstacles causing slow progress of which citizens may be unaware.

In the City of Forney’s Thoroughfare Plan, roads are categorized into one of seven roadway types: major arterial, minor arterial, major collector, downtown street, commercial collector, minor collector, and freeway. As one can assume from the names, the major and minor arterial roadways are the larger, more commonly used roads through town – the arteries of our city. All of the arterial roadways within the Forney city limits are FM 460, FM 548, FM 688, FM 741, and FM 740. With the exception of a small City-owned portion of FM 740 from the intersection of Broad Street (FM 688) and Bois D’Arc Street (FM 740) to the intersection of College Street (FM 741) and Bois D’Arc Street (FM 740), all of these Farm to Market roads are owned and maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). With the majority of every major and minor arterial roadway within the City of Forney being owned by TxDOT, the City is extremely limited on its ability to make improvements in such areas.
