Pitching and defense wins championships. Timely hitting and scoring runs in bunches helps, too. Right now, the North Forney Falcons seem to be getting it all.
While North scored runs in multiple innings in just four of their first 14 games, through game one of district play, they have done so in each of their past five games. In that stretch, the Falcons have scored in 17 of 31 innings. Take away the 8-0 home win over Terrell last Friday, where they scored their runs in just two innings, and the Falcons have now scored in 15 of their last 25 innings. Not coincidentally, the Falcons are 6-0 since district played started, including 13-0 and 8-0 wins over Terrell, and a 14-4 nondistrict win over Royse City last Saturday.
In their Tuesday night matchup at Terrell, righthanded pitcher Garrett Gray, part of the Falcons 1-2 pitching punch along with Valdemar Gonzales, continued to impress. Gray had another slow start and again found himself in second-inning trouble but, after coaxing Terrell’s Ivan Ibarra into a 1-2-3 double play, he settled in and shut down the Tigers’ offense. Gray needed only 58 pitches, over five innings, to dispose of the Tigers and earn his second district win in as many chances. Gray has given up just four hits and one earned run in 12 innings in district.
