When I was 13, I won the school spelling bee at Forney Middle School and advanced to Kaufman
County and then to the state competition. I was happy and proud and exciteduntil the cameras, bright lights and eyes of the judges at the WFAA studio were on me. I was terrified. I struck out on round 2. The word was cellulose. Cellulose!
It was disappointing to know I wouldn’t be advancing to nationals, but I was grateful for the experience and for the exposure to a vast vocabulary. I can’t take all the credit—part of that goes to my Mom. She used to follow me around the house with the spelling words book and quiz me until the 26 letters of the alphabet melted together into a conglomerate mass in my mind’s eye. But I’m glad she did it (gosh, I miss her!) because that early exposure to such an exhaustive and expansive list of words has proven invaluable to me over the years.
