After struggling to an 0-3-1 record in their final tune up in the Corsicana Tournament, the prior week, it appeared that a series against new district-mates, Lancaster, would be just what the North Forney Falcons baseball team needed to get back on track. After finishing last season 4-16, many predict the Tigers will finish near the bottom of the newly-created baseball district (5A-13). On paper, taking two from Lancaster seemed a mere formality. However, as the adage goes, that is why they play the games. And, at least in game one, it appeared that North might not have taken Lancaster as seriously as they should have.
Against Garrett Gray, the Falcons’ pitching ace, Lancaster jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. A walk, a hit-by-pitch, and poorly executed bunt defense loaded the bases with one out. Another walk brought home the first Tigers’ run before an error by Falcons’ second baseman, Cameron Moore, on a hot smash off the bat of Andrew Carter, plated two more. Gray struck out Mike Bonner looking to end the rally, his sixth strikeout of the game, but the damage had been done.
Gray, who had breezed through the pre-district schedule, had some uncharacteristic control issues early in the district opener, needing 52 pitches to get through two innings.
