On Thursday, January 24, 2019, the Dedication of the “Forney Learning Academy” was held in the building that once housed the First Baptist Church of Forney and now houses the Learning Academy. The Reception was to begin at 5:30 p. m., so I rolled into the parking lot about ten minutes early so that I could find exactly where to park and what entrance to use. It had been probably two or more years since I had been in the building, and then it had been to ask one of my former students (Patty Honeycutt in the 1970s) about some information for an upcoming FHPL historical column.
As I entered the front door, I was enthusiastically met by a teacher and five or six very young students, each eager to say “Hello; welcome—would you like a program?” As Mayor Wilson and his wife were next greeted by the children, I made a little small (pun intended) talk with the students and then moved on down the hall, stopping to visit briefly with several recognizable Forney folks, some working for the School and some just visiting, such as Dr. Warren Hatley and his lovely wife, Karen, who had been invited by “Ricky T.” to attend the dedication. Warren and I had been FHS mates and had attended this Church together at times as we were growing up.
Moving on, I was greeted by Elwood McElveen, a Technology Coordinator for FISD and a former student and yearbook worker from my teaching days. He filled me in on some details about the Academy and some of the newer faces I was seeing at the Reception.
